Citation read and presented on September 8, 2006

On May 3, 2006 Officer David Vet responded with other officers of the Lakewood Police Department to the most dangerous call an officer can respond to, The Active Shooter.

In an attempt to position himself between an individual determined to take the lives of others, Officer Vet displayed extreme courage while facing imminent peril. Officer Vet came face to face with the gunman who was attempting to leave his residence and was met with immediate hostile gunfire. A gun battle ensued, forcing the armed suspect to retreat to his residence.

Officers came under repeated gunfire and the Westshore Enforcement Bureau SWAT Team responded.

WEB SWAT Officers Ted Morley and Matt Wintrick responded immediately to this call for assistance and maintained positions within the inner perimeter. Officers Morley and Wintrick displayed extreme courage while consciously facing imminent peril and positioned themselves to prevent the escape of the active shooter.

Without warning, the armed suspect produced himself at the rear door of the residence and raised his firearm with means, intent and purpose to shoot officers.

Officer Morley and Officer Wintrick maintained their positions, without adequate cover and simultaneously engaged the suspect with precision rifle fire, ending the rampage.

The Medal of Valor award celebrates bravery and heroism beyond the call of duty.

The Medal of Valor is the Westshore Enforcement Bureau's highest honor and is awarded to officers who distinguish themselves by conspicuous bravery or heroism above and beyond the normal demands of police service.

For their performance and displaying extreme courage while consciously facing imminent peril, it is my honor on behalf of the men of the Westshore Enforcement Bureau SWAT Team to award David Vet, Ted Morley and Matt Wintrick the Medal of Valor.

Dave Vet , Ted Morley, Matt Wintrick
